‘Oumuamua as a light sail: Evidence against artificial origin
نویسندگان
چکیده
`Oumuamua, the first detected interstellar visitor to solar system, exhibits non-gravitational acceleration in its trajectory. Ruling out other means of propulsion, such as evaporation material via a cometary tail, it has been argued that radiation pressure is responsible for this acceleration. From this, mass object must be approximately 40 tonnes, and given dimensions, `Oumuamua have thickness ~1 mm if similar rock/iron composition Earth. This raises much publicised possibility artificial origin, sent intentionally across space by an alien civilisation, conclusion, however, relies upon common misapprehension light (solar) sails can accelerate considerable fraction speed light, permitting rapid travel. We show speeds are unattainable conceptual man-made that, based observed parameters, would require half billion years just travel our system from closest likely origin. These cosmological time-scales make very unlikely probe civilisation.

The sophistication, complexity and intelligence of biological systems is a continuous source of inspiration for mankind. Mimicking the natural intelligence to devise tiny systems that are capable of self-regulated, autonomous action to, for example, distinguish different targets, remains among the grand challenges in biomimetic micro-robotics. Herein, we demonstrate an autonomous soft device, a...
متن کاملPlasmonic nanoparticle chain in a light field: a resonant optical sail.
Optical trapping and driving of small objects has become a topic of increasing interest in multidisciplinary sciences. We propose to use a chain made of metallic nanoparticles as a resonant light sail, attached by one end point to a transparent object and propelling it by the use of electromagnetic radiation. Driving forces exerted on the chain are theoretically studied as a function of radiati...

متن کاملOrigin of Light
The existence of light (a massless U(1) gauge boson) is one of unresolved mysteries in nature. In this paper, we would like to propose that light is originated from certain quantum orders in our vacuum. We will construct quantum spin models on lattice to demonstrate that some quantum orders can give rise to light without breaking any symmetries and without any fine tuning. Through our models, w...
متن کاملVibronic origin of long-lived coherence in an artificial molecular light harvester
Natural and artificial light-harvesting processes have recently gained new interest. Signatures of long-lasting coherence in spectroscopic signals of biological systems have been repeatedly observed, albeit their origin is a matter of ongoing debate, as it is unclear how the loss of coherence due to interaction with the noisy environments in such systems is averted. Here we report experimental ...
